What is the best response for denying a request? ›

Be straightforward about the future.

If you don't want to leave the door open for a next ask, be clear. State your reason and then stop talking. Say: “I appreciate your request but I have other priorities and can't take on the extra work.”

The ideal rejection response is courteous and cool.

Saying that you “totally get it,” implies that you're not too upset and that maybe you weren't feeling a connection either. This text could be your go-to if you really weren't feeling the date, too.

While other applicants likely also received the same rejection email, most will not send a response. By sending a reply to any rejection emails you receive, you'll stand out among the pool of applicants who weren't selected. A polite, gracious response reflects well on you both professionally and personally.

Say something like… Thank you for your consideration of my request. Even though your response was not what I had hoped for, I appreciate your response.

I would rather not, but I appreciate you asking." "That's not the right choice for you, let's look at this one instead." "I really shouldn't this time, but thank you." "Let me get back to you, but I'm not confident about it working out."

Research proves that using the same type of reasoning as the person you're trying to persuade is much more effective than using a different one. So if the other person is being logical, use logic too. If, on the other hand, they're making decisions based on their emotions, sway them with an emotional argument.
