Zenith - de tijd ver vooruit
De Zwitserse manufactuur van luxe horloges Zenith is onlosmakelijk verbonden met het chronograafkaliber El Primero. Dit snel tikkende uurwerk, dat in 1969 onder de benaming 3019 PHC op de markt kwam, was het eerste automatische kaliber met een chronograaffunctie ter wereld. Dankzij een balansfrequentie van 36 000 halve omwenteling per uur (a/h) stopt de El Primero op een tiende van een seconde nauwkeurig. Bij de meeste chronografen van andere fabrikanten oscilleert de balans met 28 800 a/h. Daardoor kunt u de tijd maar tot op een achtste van een seconde stoppen.
In 2017 is het ultramoderne kaliber Zenith El Primero 21 door de fabrikant gepresenteerd. Deze verbeterde versie van het wereldberoemde uurwerk heeft twee ankergangen, een voor de tijdsaanduiding en een voor de chronograaffunctie. De eerste heeft een gangbare balansfrequentie van 36 000 a/h, maar de tweede ankergang tikt met een verbazingwekkende frequentie van 360 000 halve omwentelingen per uur. Dit zorgt ervoor de dat u de tijd op een honderdste van een seconde nauwkeurig kunt meten.
De gecompliceerde horloges van de Academy Christophe Colomb-reeks zijn toonbeelden van haute horlogerie. Vooral het model Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Equation of Time is een bewijs van 21e-eeuwse horlogemakerskunst. Deze tijdmeter won in 2011 de Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in de categorie 'Grote Complicaties', een van de meest prestigieuze onderscheidingen voor een mechanisch horloge. Zenith ontwikkelde een zelfregulerend mechanisme voor deze uiterst precieze polshorloges: de 'Gravity Control'-module. Dit mechanisme zorgt ervoor dat de ankergang en het regelorgaan altijd in een horizontale positie staan, onafhankelijk van de positie waarin het horloge zich bevindt. Dit baanbrekende systeem garandeert optimale gangwaarden.
Wat kost een Zenith-horloge?
In het horlogesegment van het luxegoederenconcern LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton SE (LVMH) neemt Zenith de plek in tussen TAG Heuer en Hublot. Zenith-horloges zijn gericht op hippe horlogeliefhebbers met een neus voor traditie, hoogwaardige manufactuurkalibers en innovatieve technologieën. De uurwerken, die in de eigen manufactuur zijn ontwikkeld en geproduceerd, tikken ook binnenin de voordelige modellen van de Elite-collectie. Deze dames- en herenhorloges hebben een overwegend klassiek design en zijn daardoor geschikt als dress watches. Zenith streeft ernaar hoogwaardige luxe horloges aan te bieden voor een relatief betaalbare prijs. Jean-Claude Biver, de CEO van het LVMH-concern, is verantwoordelijk voor deze strategie.
Een echt koopje doet u in het vintage-segment. Veel gebruikte pols- en zakhorloges kosten minder dan een paar honderd euro. Zelfs chronografen met het beroemde El Primero-uurwerk zijn er gedragen vanaf ongeveer 1700 euro. Het zijn vaak modellen uit de jaren 90, die in een goede staat verkeren. Voor nieuwe exemplaren betaalt u een stuk meer, u dient rekening te houden met een prijs van minstens 3300 euro.

Zenith El Primero – de legendarische chronograaf
De El Primero behoort zonder twijfel tot de bekendste en beste chronograafkalibers ter wereld. Daarom is het niet meer dan logisch dat behalve Zenith ook andere fabrikanten gebruik maken van dit kaliber. Zelfs Rolex plaatste de El Primero van 1988 tot 2000 in de Daytona. Het ging daarbij om een sterk gemodificeerde versie met de benaming 4030. Tegenwoordig profiteert TAG Heuer, dat deel uitmaakt van hetzelfde concern, van het hoogfrequente uurwerk. Binnenin het model TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 36 tikt een gemodificeerde El Primero.
De geschiedenis van deze klassieker onder de kalibers gaat terug tot 1969. Destijds ontstond een driestrijd tussen Zenith, Seiko en een samenwerkingsverband van Breitling, Heuer en Büren over wie het eerste automatische chronograafkaliber kon produceren. De Zwitserse horlogefabrikant Zenith kwam als winnaar uit de bus. Exemplaren uit 1969 zijn tegenwoordig relatief zeldzaam, maar niet zo duur als u zou verwachten. Afhankelijk van de staat koopt u deze chronograaf voor rond de 5000 euro. Zeer goed onderhouden varianten van geelgoud kunnen echter meer dan 10 000 euro kosten. Dit is in vergelijking met Rolex Daytona uit 1969 nog altijd relatief voordelig. De prijs van deze vintage-Rolex kan boven de 180 000 euro uitkomen.
De gedragen exemplaren uit de jaren 80 en 90 zijn goed betaalbaar. De prijzen van deze El Primero-horloges liggen rond de 2000 euro. Voor een paar honderd euro meer heeft u een model uit de jaren 70.
Actuele modellen met de El Primero
Van de huidige collectie lijkt het horloge met een doorsnede van 38 mm en het referentienummer 03.2150.400/26.C714 het meest op het origineel uit 1969. Dit edelstalen model koopt u in ongedragen staat voor ca. 5100 euro. Als u de voorkeur geeft aan een kast met een diameter van 42 mm, komt u uit bij de Chronomaster El Primero 42. Dit model is er in edelstaal, roodgoud of in een bicolor-uitvoering van roodgoud en edelstaal. Voor de edelstalen versie met het referentienummer 03.2040.400/69.C494 betaalt u ongeveer 5000 euro. Als u kiest voor de gouden variant, bent u meer dan het dubbele kwijt, ca. 11 000 euro.
Het bijzondere aan het model met het referentienummer 24.2041.400/21.R576 is dat de behuizing van deze tijdmeter uit gekeramiseerd aluminium bestaat. Het gaat hier om aluminium waarvan het oppervlak door een speciaal oxidatieproces in oxidekeramiek wordt omgezet. Aan het einde van de procedure is de behuizing extreem hard, licht en kras- en corrosiebestendig. Deze versie kost minimaal 6600 euro.
Top El-Primero-modellen
De gouden Zenith-horloges waar binnenin een El Primero-kaliber met eentourbillon tikt, vormen het hoogtepunt van deze collectie. Deze luxe horloges kosten nieuw ongeveer 55 000 euro. Met een edelstalen horlogekast zijn ze ongeveer 10 000 euro goedkoper. U koopt een gedragen exemplaar van roodgoud in zeer goede staat voor ca. 30 000 euro. De Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Tourbillon GFJ is nog exclusiever. Bij dit horloge geschiedt de transmissie door middel van een ketting en een fusee, ook wel snek genoemd. Dit mechanisme treft u zelden aan in een horloge. In tegenstelling tot traditionele mechanismes, zorgen de ketting en de snek voor een constante overdracht van kracht. Dit heeft een positief effect op de gangwaarden van het horloge. Een gouden Chronomaster El Primero Tourbillon GFJ met het referentienummer 18.2520.4805/98.C713 kost nieuw meer dan 70 000 euro.
De volledig geskeletteerde horloges met een El Primero-uurwerk zijn echte eyecatchers. De manufactuur uit Le Locle gebruikt de naamtoevoeging 'Full Open' om aan te geven dat de tijdmeters geskeletteerd zijn. U kunt het uurwerk zowel aan de voor- als achterkant zien, omdat het horloge ook een saffierglazen zichtbodem heeft. Voor nieuwe bicolor-varianten met het referentienummer 51.2081.400/78.C810 betaalt u ongeveer 7000 euro.
De chronograaf van de 21e eeuw
Zenith presenteerde de Defy El Primero 21 in 2017 op Baselword, de belangrijkste horlogebeurs van de branche. Het kaliber van dit horloge is een doorontwikkelde versie van het chronograafkaliber El Primero. Het uurwerk heeft twee van elkaar onafhankelijke ankergangen. De eerste tikt met een normale frequentie van 36 000 a/h en zorgt voor de juiste tijdweergave. De tweede oscilleert met 360 000 a/h, wat overeenkomt met 50 Hz. Deze ankergang is verantwoordelijk voor de chronograaffunctie en maakt het meten van de tijd op een honderdste van een seconde mogelijk. Momenteel is de Defy El Primero 21 er in keramiek of titanium. De tweede versie kunt u met een geskeletteerde wijzerplaat of met een zilverkleurige wijzerplaat en zwarte hulpwijzerplaten in retro-look kopen. De prijs van dit titanium horloge begint bij ongeveer 7200 euro. Een geskeletteerd model van titanium of keramiek kost rond de 8500 euro.
Pilotenhorloges van Zenith
Hoewel de polshorloges met het El Primero-kaliber de bekendste modellen van Zenith zijn, heeft de Zwitserse manufactuur nog andere populaire reeksen in het portfolio. Het gaat onder andere om de Pilot-collectie, waarin u tegenwoordig klassieke pilotenhorloges vindt. Zenith heeft een lange traditie op het gebied van de luchtvaart en rust sinds de begindagen van het vliegverkeer piloten en vliegtuigen uit met tijdmeetinstrumenten.
Vooral de Type 20 Extra Special lijkt door het retro-design op de modellen uit de jaren 40. De opvallendste kenmerken zijn de grote kast, wijzers en cijfers en een oversized uivormige kroon. Deze is eenvoudig met handschoenen te bedienen. De modellen Pilot Type 20 Skeleton en Pilot Type 20 Hommage à Louis Blériot zijn bijzonder zeldzaam. Beide horloges hebben een zeer beperkte oplage van 5 exemplaren en kosten ongeveer 205 000 euro.
De in serie geproduceerde pilotenhorloges zijn een stuk voordeliger. Het bronzen horloge met drie wijzers vindt u onder het referentienummer 29.2430.679/21.C753. Voor een nieuwe versie betaalt u ongeveer 5000 euro. Met een chronograaffunctie kost dit pilotenhorloge in ongedragen staat rond de 6000 euro. U kunt ook kiezen voor een kunstmatig verouderde edelstalen horlogekast. Deze verweerde look geeft het horloge een bijzondere vintage touch. U betaalt 5000 voor de variant met drie wijzers, de uitvoering met een stopwatchfunctie is 500 euro duurder.
Tijdloze, elegante dress watches
De Zenith Elite-serie kwam in 1994 op de markt, toen mechanische horloges een renaissance beleefden. In deze elegante polshorloges tikken bijzonder platte automatische uurwerken met een hoogte van 3,3 mm. De tijdmeter heeft een hoge gangreserve, die na volledige opwinding 55 uur bedraagt. Gedragen exemplaren uit de jaren 90 koopt u voor rond de 1000 euro. Nieuwere versies kosten in zeer goede staat ca. 1600 euro. De prijzen van ongedragen horloges beginnen bij ongeveer 2700 euro. Topuitvoeringen van 18-karaats roségoud met een tourbillon kosten meer dan 50 000 euro. Als u niet per se een tourbillon wilt, koopt u een nieuw gouden horloge met een bijpassende horlogeband van hetzelfde materiaal voor ca. 16 000 euro. Een gouden Zenith Elite met een leren horlogeband kost ongeveer 9000 euro.
Traditie sinds 1865
De geschiedenis van de horlogemanufactuur Zenith gaat meer dan 150 jaar terug. De horlogemaker Georges Favre-Jacot richtte de onderneming in 1865 op te Le Locle. Volgens de overlevering vernoemde de oprichter zijn bedrijf naar het hoogste punt aan het firmament, nadat hij een uurwerk van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit had gemaakt. Met de naam Zenith en de vijfpuntige ster als logo symboliseert de fabrikant het streven naar de hoogste prestaties op het gebied van de horlogemakerij.
Aanvankelijk concentreerde Favre-Jacot zich op de productie van zakhorloges. Daarnaast bracht hij alle belangrijke horlogemakersberoepen samen in zijn manufactuur om onafhankelijk te blijven van leveranciers. Van begin af aan vervaardigde Zenith uiterste nauwkeurige tijdmeters, die later aan de chronometercompetitie van het Observatorium van Neuchâtel deelnamen en vanaf 1903 meermaals wonnen. Favre-Jacot verliet de onderneming in 1911 en droeg de leiding over aan zijn oomzegger James Favre. Sinds 2000 behoort Zenith tot het luxegoederenconcern LVMH.
Zenith maakte aanvankelijk ontelbare zakhorloges, maar ook boordklokken. Aan het begin van de 20e eeuw presenteerde de manufactuur een van de eerste polshorloges met een wekkerfunctie. Daarnaast ontwikkelde Zenith ook goed afleesbare pilotenhorloges, die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog door piloten werden gedragen. Chronografen bevinden zich sinds ongeveer 100 jaar in het portfolio van de fabrikant. Het kaliber El Primero is tot op de dag van vandaag het bekendste product van Zenith.
