Guide: Fix ‘Google Chrome Translate Not Working Issue
Google Chrome’s ability to seamlessly translate foreign languages into English (or any other preferred language) is easily one of the best features. Still, there are instances when Chrome’s integrated Google Translate module may not work correctly. If the browser has problems translating websites, this post will look for ways to fix them.
There are several reasons why Chrome may not translate foreign websites. This could be due to incorrectly configured language settings, extension conflicts or an outdated web cache.
So, let’s look at several troubleshooting solutions that you can apply right away to get the translation from Chrome features to function properly again.
Note: It’s best to update Chrome to the latest version before getting started. That alone could solve any malfunctions or anomalies with the integrated Google Translate module.
Turn on Translation Prompts
Chrome is configured to automatically prompt you to translate foreign websites by default. If the browser doesn’t, ensure the relevant language setting is enabled.
First, go to the Chrome Settings panel: open the Chrome menu and click Settings.
Expand the Advanced section on the left side of the Settings panel and click Languages. Then click Language under Languages (right side of the window) to display additional options.
Make sure the toggle next to ‘Offer to translate pages that are not in a language you read’ is turned on.
If you had to enable the option, close the Settings panel and try to load a foreign website. You should see a prompt to translate the website right away.
Translate web pages manually.
Sometimes Chrome’s automatic translation prompts fail, especially if web pages contain a mix of languages. But do not worry. Chrome also comes with an option that allows you to forcibly translate pages.
Right-click an empty area on a web page, then click Translate to English.
That should prompt the browser to translate the foreign language into English. If you want to return to the original language, just reload the page.
Use incognito mode
If you repeatedly receive a ‘This page cannot be translated (or similar) error message in Google Chrome, there is a good chance that an extension is in conflict with the integrated Google Translate module.
To check if this is the case, try loading the website in incognito mode as it will run with all extensions disabled. Open the Chrome menu, then click New Incognito Mode to up a new incognito window.
If Chrome translates foreign web pages into incognito mode without problems, you should isolate the problematic extension.
Go to the Chrome extension screen (Chrome menu> More tools> Extensions) and keep turning off extensions while trying to translate web pages to isolate the problematic extension.
Clear cookies and cache
An outdated Chrome web cache can also throw ‘This page cannot be translated’ error messages.
If the problem is limited to one site, try clearing the web cache related to it. First, load the website in a new tab, click the padlock-shaped icon in the address bar and select Site Settings.
On the Site Settings page that appears up, click Clear data. That should prompt Chrome to delete all locally stored data from the website.
New website. The browser should probably translate it without any problems.
Alternatively, you can clear the entire browser cache in cases where Chrome doesn’t translate multiple websites. Remember that you will have to log in to websites again once you do that.
Go to Chrome settings> Privacy and security> Clear browsing data. In the Clear browsing data box that appears up, go to the Advanced tab, set the Time range to Always, check the boxes next to ‘Cookies and site data’ and ‘Cached images and files, then click Clear data.
Warning: Do not check the boxes next to “Passwords and other login information” and “Autofill form information.” Otherwise, Chrome will permanently delete your passwords and autofill information.
Use the Google Translate extension
Despite going through the above solutions, Chrome’s integrated Google Translate module may still not work on certain websites for unknown reasons.
In that case, try to use the Google Translate extension. You can download it from the Chrome Web Store.
Download Google Translate
The Google Translate extension lets you quickly translate entire pages and text fragments. It too features the ability to send words, phrases or paragraphs directly to the Google Translate website.
You can disable the Google Translate extension and enable it only for cases where Chrome’s integrated Google Translate module does not work.
Hopefully the troubleshooting tips above helped you solve Chrome’s translation problems. If you still experience regular issues with the integrated Google Translate module, consider resetting Chrome. This is a great way to start using the browser with a clean slate.
